Education in the Western World

We think that the education of our children is something that takes place in good faith by well-intentioned people who have no other agenda than the betterment of our next generation.

Perhaps it was once so, and perhaps with individuals, it is still the so. There are teachers who believe in the unique value of each child under their care, they believe in the future of the race, they believe in the nurturing and furtherance of the young mind, hoping to develop the best qualities of each individual, in the service of his own life, his future and the family and community he is part of.

But what of the outside forces that shape our education system, introducing labels with stigma attached.

There is the child who is not taught to read with phonics on a step by step basis, building up familiarity and recognition with the sounds and shapes of the letters he is seeing, how to combine, how different combinations are used to show different sounds, shape the way a word is pronounced, shifting its meaning slightly to tell us details such as when the action took place, now or in the far distant past, or still dreamed of in a future time, whether one or more people were involved and so on.

When the child didn’t spend enough time for that child to learn the letters all of the alphabet and know them cold, then is it any surprise that the same child sometimes can’t read a word that begins with a letter he or she can’t recognise.

What would you say? You would probably say the first thing that came into your head when the teacher asked you to read aloud in class. It doesn’t mean the child has dyslexia or has a mental disorder needing a drug to handle it or glasses so he can read.

It just means the child needs to practice recognising the letters of the alphabet a bit more and learn how to put the sounds together with other letters to make the sounds that words are made up of.

It’s a skill learned at school, at the mother’s knee or grandmother’s kitchen table, wherever it takes place. But it needs to take place, in every language with every student if that child is to learn to read and write.

It used to be called “The Three R’s”; Reading, Writing and ‘Rithmetic.

That’s a bit old fashioned nowadays, and sounds a bit boring.

But it’s still the backbone and foundation of a skillset that sets the child up for life.

And no amount of psychobabble or medication will substitute for doing the work and learning the basics.

Where to Start?

There are a lot of opportunities out there to increase your income or to start making an income on line. Sometimes, it seems the problem is not to find a way, a thing to do.

In fact, It’s the opposite. There are so many ways, so many opportunities, it’s hard to know where to start. How to choose? It takes understanding and data in order to decide. Until you do it, you don’t get enough data to make the decision.

Can I make a success of this? Or would that be a better fit ? Well, this is something I am interested in, but now I found out some more about it, I can see it won’t really work with everything else I got going on, but I need to keep going with them so ….. well, what about this? Oh no, that’s just a load of hype. Ok well this looks much better. I’ll look into this.

And before you know it a year or two or even more has gone by. No progress, nothing changed. A lot of ideas, no action. A lot of thinking, a lot of effort, a lot of expense checking things out, a lot of time spent checking things out… a lot of checking out.

One good thing that came of all the checking out is seeing who has stayed the course. Who has made a success, who continues to deliver, who gives value for money, whose methods work, who has won respect, earned a good reputation, who will be here tomorrow.
Names that come up again and again are Jim Cockrum, Skip McGrath, John Thornhill, Stuart Turnbull, Mark Ling.

Jim Cockrum is an experienced Ebay seller who went on to sell on Amazon. He has several training porgrams including the Silent Sales Machine and Proven Amazon Course.

Skip McGrath is another one of the original Ebay sellers. He has been selling on this platform for many years, and also now sells on Amazon, writes a regular newsletter, sells his training program and contributes to others success with advice, tips and wholesale sources for physical products.

John Thornhill joined the ranks of the Ebay legends. He sells and promotes internet marketing programs. His big ticket program is Partnership to Success. He is hard working, sincere, and helpful. The information he includes sets you up to build your own website, products and sales for information products.

Stuart Turnbull has a successful prints and public domain products business, which he shares with others. His is a fun method for a person looking for an additional bit of extra money in a creative way.

You need to work out what you want to do, name it and want it and take action to get it

Education – Some Thoughts About It

Been looking at education recently and seeing what some people of influence had to say about it.

Some amazing and fruitful quotes came to view when googling education and I felt I had to pass some of them on.

One of the best was the words of Martin Luther King, actually Dr Martin Luther King, a Doctor of Diviinity, a civil rights leader, an American man of colour as we would now say, who obviously thought long and hard about a great many things in his struggle to overcome segregation and racial prejudice in America. In his consideration

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

He became a spokesman for more than the black civil rights movement. He became a leader of men on the world stage as these words show from his Nobel Peace prize acceptance speech in Oslo, 1964.

“I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits.”
Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, Oslo, Norway, 1964

So when talking about books and reading, and why we should teach little children to read and let them keep them at it, I came across this little priceless nugget of insight from another great voice of America. This time Oprah Winfrey, the talk host show, Number 2 on the Forbes list of the 10 Top Richest Self Made Women at an estimated 3.1 billion fortune.

“Books were my pass to personal freedom. I learned to read at age three, and soon discovered there was a whole world to conquer that went beyond our farm in Mississippi.”

Well that is certainly a shift of viewpoint. She grew up on a small farm, with her grandmother, where they grew everything. There were no shopping trips to town.

Oprah has this to say about herself.

“I don’t think of myself as a poor deprived ghetto girl who made good. I think of myself as somebody who, from an early age, knew I was responsible for myself, and I had to make good.”

And so this brings me to another completely different story from the opposite end of the spectrum.

This is the incredibly inspiring story of Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Peace prize winner at the age of 17, in 2014. Malala was born in Pakistan where her father was an educator and had a school. Malala wanted to learn, and become educated which was not something the Taliban were in favour of.

Malala also had been blogging for the BBC since 2009 about life and conditions under the Taliban regime. This was not popular with them either.

One day on her way to school, some Taliban soldiers got on the bus taking her and her friends to school and asked which of the girls on the bus was Malala. When she was identified, she was shot at close range in the head. Miraculously, she did not die. She was flown to Birmingham in the United Kingdom, where doctors operated on her more than once to save her life. She is now living in the United Kingdom with her family and pursuing her education. Her story went viral and she rose to become a person of influence and speaker about matters of concern for her.

Malala was awarded the Nobel Peace prize for her actions her struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education. She shared the prize with Kailash Satyarthi.

She has this to say about her experiences.

“I don’t want to be remembered as the girl who was shot. I want to be remembered as the girl who stood up.

The one thing she said that I love best of all is this statement.

“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.

And so to close, these profound words.

“Extremists have shown what frightens them most. A girl with a book.”

“With guns you can kill terrorists, with education you can kill terrorism.”

Who wants to increase their income?

For many people who want to earn some extra income, one of the most confusing things is where to start. How to find out what will work for them with their budget and time constraints, their lifestyle and commitments. And how to do this quickly so that they can get on with earning that much needed extra income now, not next year.

The internet is one of the best opportunities and one of the best opportunities on the internet is selling on line. Whatever your age, your education, your location or circumstances, this presents a possibility to get started small, and build up a little or a lot depending on how far you want take it, how much you need to earn.

For some people, selling physical products represents an ideal and simple way to move forward, while still maintaining their existing activities and all without adding a lot of overheads, or outlay. There are stories of pensioners and grandmas making good on line as well as teenagers and college students and a healthy number of stay-at-home mums and single parents who turn their hands to online business built out of hours when the kids are asleep or at school.

There are several places on line where someone can start selling. Here are some of them: Ebay, Etsy, Amazon, Salehoo, Ebid, Ruby Lane to mention some of them.

I’ll be taking a look at some of these opportunities over the next few weeks and writing about what I find.

More About Amazon

Starting out by selling on Amazon or Ebay is one of the simplest ways to get started making extra income on line. If you get familiar with it and find it suits you, there are a lot of opportunities and ways to scale it up depending on how much income you want to make. What makes it so attractive is that it can be done from almost anywhere in the country anywhere in the world. You can fit it around your other time committments. And you can get yourself up and running with little start up costs and scale up as time and resources and needs change.

That being said it, it is also worth getting helpful and useful advice from those who have been there, done it and are willing to pass on their valuable experience and know-how.

Amazing Selling Machine is a high end training programme which will kickstart you on Amazon into stratospheric levels. Unfortunately, it has just closed its doors on its current training class.  However, it’s not for every one as the training course itself is expensive and there are other costs you need to cover to get the programme rolling as you go through the training steps.

At the other end of the spectrum, there are four people who come to mind who offer excellent training on Amazon at a fraction of the price. All are personally successfull. All have excellent reputations as honest, trustworthy individuals as well as their excellent reputations for producing effective quality training programmes that will teach you the skills and know how to become successful. Some have additional back up support with forum, facebook groups, one-on-one mentoring sessions available.

Over the next few days, I will be writing about some other low cost, effective Amazon training programs which will get you up and running as a seller online on Amazon.

The eBook University

Came across something different today. It’s called eBook University and is the inspiration of Phil Gosling.

Phil has a wealth of experience in making success in the home publishing world. It started 20 years ago, in his own words when “I found myself with no job, no usable qualifications, a serious health condition, two small mouths and a very large mortgage to feed”.

When he started out, in the days before the internet came into existence, this meant writing his book, then then getting his book printed on paper in order to publish and distribute them. A costly process.

Today, anyone can sit at home, or at the beach, or in the garden, or on trip and write an ebook, and distribute it to a worldwide audience for a fraction of the effort of handling a physical product and little or no costs.

And this is what Phil will show you how to do successfully, so you can leverage this to make some extra income or build it up to a full life-support system for you financially, doing something you enjoy.vTaht has to be the perfect home business.

Partnership to Success – Is It For YOU?

One of the simplest ways to create success is to find someone who is successful and copy and learn from them. In a new field of opportunity such as we have now with the internet, there are individuals who have gone on to achieve stellar success. An examination of what they did and how they did it will give insights that can lead others to success by inspiration, information and example. This can be at a distance through books or word of mouth–and as as result, is diluted and second hand. Sometimes one comes upon an opportunity to learn directly from a successful source. Such an opportunity is to be grabbed and utilised to its fullest.

Such an opportunity is available now with John Thornhill’s Partnership to Success program. John has recently opened the doors to his special training program in which he personally takes the members of his program through the steps he followed to achieve his own resounding success on line as an internet marketer, producing his own information products.

John’s story is simple. He worked in a car factory. When the internet came along, he saw that this provided him with the opportunity to get of the trap he was in. He went for it, and worked at it relentlessly till he had changed his life, quit the day job and moved on to a better life.

It took hard work and persistence. It took time. It took self-discipline.
It was fun; it was financially rewarding; it was fulfilling.

Now John helps other people achieve new skills and better lives through on-line training and personal mentoring he provides, one on one and in group situations such as weekly webinars where he takes you behind the scenes in his own on-line business.
He’s been there — so he knows how bad it can be and how good it can get and he can help you.

How to Start Your Life on Line

One of the first things you will need to start your life on line is a blog. Sounds easy enough and it will be when you follow these steps.

The best way to start is with a domain name. This is unique to you and you own it, like having your own house or shop front on the world wide web. There are other options such as Blogger which is free through gmail. However, you run the risk of being effect of someone else’s decisions and changes in ways that can’t happen if you own your own space.

There are a number of different places where you can check to see if the domain name you want is already registered or if the name you have chosen is available. Then you can register for your use.  D9 has a good domain checking service. On this site,  you can quickly check out your proposed domain name. They also are a very reliable hosting company with great back up service.

D9 is a company I am happy to recommend because they want to help new users find their feet and be successful. Having been there and done that themselves, they know what it’s like, both the good and the bad. They offer a lot of support to help newcomers to the internet world. I can certainly say that with confidence as I found their support very useful.

So, what to choose for your domain name? The best domain name you can choose to get started is your own name. There is a very simple reason for this. You can bet that as soon as someone starts to become successful, if they haven’t got their name registered, someone else will register that name as a domain name. You don’t want to be facing a struggle or extra expense to be able to get the use of your own name at some point of time in the future. It’s best to keep the domain name as short as possible, something that is easy for people to remember and easy to spell if your name is a bit exotic. A jeweller friend raises another important consideration. There’s another reason to use your name, and that is that people are more likely to remember your name than the name of your website.

There’s no limit to how many domains you own, so you can always set up other domains relating to a particular subject, interest or activity any time you want. With hosting at D9, you get unlimited hosting for as many domains as you want.

The easiest way to get a website up and running is to use WordPress to start off with. You can get yourself set up within minutes. I’ll go over that in another blog soon.

Hope this helps,
